Health and safety

Everyone's safety and wellbeing is most important to us. To that end we follow all of the recommendations made to us by the HSE and our governing body under UK Snowsports. In doing so we take all possible precautions to ensure a safe snowsports environment for everyone to enjoy.

Snowsports require a moderate level of fitness and can be physically testing. All participants must accept that there is a risk of injury when undertaking such activities due to the possibility of falling.

In the unlikely event of an accident, or loss or damage to any personal effects, the Company will not be liable for any direct or indirect loss, damage or injury arising from or in connection with skiing, snowboarding or tubing (except in instances caused by the Company's negligence).

By agreeing to take part in any of our activities, participants waive all and any claims against the Company in this respect and in respect of anyone under their care.

Insurance

Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard Centre has public liability insurance for at least £5 million with a clause giving indemnity to principal. A copy of the insurance certificate is available on request.

Health and safety and emergency policy

Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard Centre complies with all relevant health and safety regulations, including the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and associated regulations for visits taking place in the UK, and has a health and safety policy and recorded risk assessments. The risk assessment register is available on request.

Health and staffing

All reasonable steps are taken to check staff who have access to young people for relevant criminal history and suitability to work with young people.

There are adequate and regular opportunities for liaison between school and youth group staff and the Ski & Snowboard Centre's staff. There is sufficient flexibility to make changes to the programme if necessary, and the reason for any such changes will be made known to the school or youth group staff.

Activity management

Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard Centre operates a policy for staff recruitment, training and assessment which ensures that all staff with a responsibility for participants are competent to undertake their duties.

The Centre maintains a written code of practice for activities which is consistent with the relevant National Governing Body's guidelines. All staff are qualified and registered with the National Governing Body, comply with the code of conduct policy of the Governing Body, and are first aid qualified.

There is a clear definition of responsibilities between the Ski & Snowboard Centre and visiting staff regarding supervision and welfare of participants.

All equipment used in the activities is suited to the task and adequately maintained in accordance with statutory requirements and current good practice, with regular checks and maintenance carried out.

International Snowsports Rules of Conduct (the 10 FIS rules)

The following health and safety rules are for everyone's benefit. Please follow them and help us ensure that you have a safe visit.

• Consideration towards other skiers and snowboarders. Every skier and snowboarder must conduct themselves in a manner that neither endangers nor injures others.
• Control of speed and skiing style. Every skier and snowboarder must ride in a manner appropriate to visibility conditions. They must adjust their speed and riding style to their abilities and the condition of snow, weather and environment, as well as to how busy the slopes are.
• Choice of track. A skier or snowboarder approaching from behind must select their track so as not to endanger those skiers or snowboarders in front of them.
• Passing. Passing may take place from above or below, from the right or left, but only at a distance which allows the skier or snowboarder you are passing enough room to complete all of their movements unhindered.
• Entering, re-entering and skiing uphill. Every skier and snowboarder who enters a piste, re-enters after stopping, or wants to head back up the slope must check above and below to make sure they can do so without endangering themselves or others.
• Stopping. Unless absolutely necessary, a skier or snowboarder must avoid stopping on the slope at bottlenecks or where visibility is restricted. If a skier or snowboarder has fallen, they must leave such a place as quickly as possible.
• Ascent and descent. A skier or snowboarder who is ascending or descending on foot must keep to the edge of the slope.
• Pay attention to signs. Every skier and snowboarder must pay attention to markings and signals.
• Obligation to render assistance. In the event of an accident, every skier and snowboarder is obliged to render assistance.
• Identification requirement. Every skier and snowboarder, whether a witness or involved in the incident, whether responsible or not, must present personal identification in the case of an accident.

Four additional responsibilities for snowboarders

• Leash. The front leg must be firmly tethered to the board by a safety strap.
• Look. It is essential to look left and right when changing direction, especially when starting a turn heel side. Glance behind.
• Ability. The ability to ski does not automatically mean the same ability to snowboard.
• Instruction. Do not attempt the sport without qualified instruction.

Local rules of conduct on the slopes

• You take part in all activities provided at your own risk.
• Recreational use requires control of speed and direction and the ability to use the lifts. This is an essential requirement and failure to comply will result in the termination of use without refund.
• For your protection, gloves, long sleeves and trousers must be worn at all times.
• Teaching other than by Brentwood Park Ski & Snowboard School's instructors is not permitted.
• Obey all ski lift signs and markings. They are there for your safety. Misuse of ski lifts and equipment can be dangerous and will result in the termination of use without refund.
